As a Derbyshire based newborn photographer, I was one of the closest choices for Willow’s parents to come and visit, so her mum Katie contacted me early on in her pregnancy to make sure she secured her date in order to have her baby’s session. She wanted it to be a surprise, so asked not to have baby’s sex revealed during her second scan.
We booked the date and waited. The date came and went and we were nowhere near meeting her tiny Pumpkin (who later on turned out not to be so tiny after all!). Willow was very happy inside, so it took her a good while to join us, but I finally met her and her lovely parents at the end of September. She was nine days old when she came to see me, but at first glance she looked about a month old, with beautiful, flake free skin and gorgeous eyes.
Due to arriving fairly late, she was much more alert than most of the nine days old newborns I photograph, but there is a certain charm that comes from photographing newborns that are wide awake for a good part of the session. Their eyes look curious and even though their vision at this age is still very limited, I am convinced they can see me clearly as they look amused and interested, especially when seeing my massive lens close to their face!
They may fight it, they may throw their arms around, but eventually every baby falls asleep. Sometimes though they put up a good fight. Willow wasn’t really interested in sleeping half as much as she was interested in checking out what was going on around her…
..She did, however, go to sleep for a while, so I managed to capture some lovely photos of her..
Most of the photos we have taken were very neutral, to go with any space, when hung on the wall. Since Willow’s parents didn’t know whether they were expecting a boy or a girl, the nursery was decorated in very neutral colours. We managed to add a splash of colour at the end of the session though, with a bit of autumn hues and of course a bit of pink and purple!
