I may be going on about the timing for your newborn session booking a lot, but hear me out folks. Timing is everything, when it comes to getting the right window of time for that first session. The absolute best “age is between 7 and 14 days old, when our dinkies are still really sleepy and extremely bendy, and happy to pose curled up, like the delicious Pumpkins they are.
Preparing for a newborn session requires careful planning and attention to detail to ensure a smooth and successful photo shoot. Here are some tips to help you prepare:
1. Schedule the session early: Newborns are best photographed within the first two weeks of their life when they are still very sleepy and easier to pose. Contact us in advance to secure a session date that aligns with your due date.
We work on your due date when we are pencilling your session in the calendar. Then we add around a week and boom! You are in! We confirm this date again upon the arrival of our superstar, in case they are with us sooner or later than expected, or in case you need to stay in the hospital for longer for any reason. But the moment you are booked, your session will take place 100%, no matter when your baby arrives.
2. Communicate with us: Discuss your vision, preferences, and any specific poses or setups you’d like to include in the session. Share any special props or sentimental items you’d like to incorporate into the photos. We want this session to be special to you and reflect your taste and desires, and reflect your style and preference.
3. Choose the right location: Decide whether you want the session to take place in a studio or at your home. Consider factors like lighting, comfort, and convenience when making this decision. Home sessions come at a premium, but we can discuss this at the time of booking.
4. Keep the baby comfortable: Ensure that your baby is well-fed and has a clean diaper before the session. Dress them in loose-fitting clothes that are easy to remove without disturbing their sleep. Bring extra diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes in case of accidents. Bring plenty of food if you are not breastfeeding. Bring a dummy if you are using one. Sometimes it can make all the difference to your session!
8. Plan for feeding and breaks: Newborns often need to be fed and may require breaks during the session. From experience I can say your baby will eat more during the shoot than they would in the same amount of time, just staying at home, as we keep the studio extra warm and babies get dehydrated faster. So it’s not quite hunger, but the means for them to get liquids are the same, so you may end up feeding them a lot more when at the studio. Be prepared with bottles, breastfeeding supplies, and any other necessary items to keep the baby comfortable and content.
9. Dress appropriately: You and other family members will be included in the photos, unless you fist fight me! I always try to get everyone involved. Choose clothing that coordinates well together. Opt for neutral or pastel colours that won’t distract from the baby’s natural beauty. I want all the focus to be on your baby and your family, so please avoid patterns and strong colours.
10. Relax and enjoy the experience: Remember, newborn sessions are meant to capture the precious moments of your baby’s early days. Relax, trust our expertise, and enjoy the process. Your positive energy and calmness will help create a peaceful and comfortable environment for the baby.
By following these tips and collaborating with us, you can ensure a memorable and beautiful newborn session that captures the essence of your little one’s early days.
