Just like with every profession, there are people out there that will inspire your work, make you want to say: “wow” and give you goosebumps. Newborn photography is not any different, so today I’d like to share with you two of my favourite newborn photographers that inspire me. There are many more, but these two are very different, with distinctive style and masses of followers. They are artists, capturing those precious first moments of babies lives and freezing them for us forever. It’s utterly selfish to keep them all to myself, so I decided to let you into their world, to be amazed and fall in love with their creations.
Bethney Backhaus
At the beginning of my career as a newborn photographer, I remember seeing her work and thinking: how can she only have a thousand of Facebook followers? Her work is out of this world! She locks the beauty of a newborn in the simplicity of her photography and makes babies the centre stage of every session. It truly is all about the baby. In the world of countless props, Bethney channels minimalism like no one else in the newborn photography world. With the release of her Breakout training videos, the world suddenly opened their eyes and realised we all need to get back to basics and focus on our model, their little kinks, their fresh personality. Stop adjusting perfection, and just let them be. Belly clamp still attached? It’s part of who they are at this very moment.
Bethney’s fans love her, because she brings something new. Photographers love her, because in order to follow her style, they do not need thousands of pounds worth of props. Her client’s love her, because she focuses on what is important to them. Her “less is more” motto certainly resonates with me.
Here are some of her photographs:
Luisa Dunn
On the opposite side of the scale, Luisa brings you the most amazing combinations of colour possible. Being a person incapable of putting two complimenting colours together without a colour wheel, I absolutely admire Louisa’s ability to combine shades that create a true feast for the eyes. There are never two images that are the same. Somehow she always manages to surprise me and make me wait patiently for more. I have her Facebook page set to “all notifications”, as I really do not want to miss a single picture that comes from her camera. If anyone can make babies look like candy, she can do it. I am pretty convinced, even a non-maternal woman would suddenly want to have a bunch of babies, just by looking at Luisa’s photos.
Here are just a few from the vast array of Luisa’s stunning setups:
Both Luisa and Bethney are very different, yet very true to their own, individual, very characteristic style. They are instantly recognisable. Copied by many, but rarely successfully. They have carved the path in newborn photography that will be an inspiration for thousands of newborn photographers for years to come.
If you love their work, follow Luisa and Bethney ‘s Facebook accounts and see more on their websites.
